You are coming from a State of the European Union, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway or Switzerland

If you are a national of one of these States, you don't need to obtain a student visa to study in France, regardless of the duration.

A) You have a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) or a temporary replacement certificate

You can obtain reimbursement of your medically necessary treatment in France under the same conditions as if you were in your own country. Your card must be valid at least until the end of the current university year. (find out more: Using the EHIC in France).

B) You have a Portable Document S1

To benefit from coverage of your healthcare costs during your studies, you must register with the French health insurance system via the website etudiant-etranger.ameli.fr

You must attach the following documents to this application:

  • the S1 form,
  • a certificate of enrolment for the current university year,
  • evidence of civil status,
  • bank details (RIB).

C) You don't have one of the documents mentioned above

To benefit from coverage of your healthcare costs during your studies, you must register with the French Social Security system via the website etudiant-etranger.ameli.fr.

You must attach the following documents to this application:

  • a certificate of enrolment for the current university year,
  • evidence of means,
  • proof of identity,
  • evidence of civil status,
  • bank details (RIB).

You must have sufficient means to cover your needs and those of any members of your family who may accompany you.

You are coming from the United Kingdom

Since 1st January 2021, as British national, you must apply for a long-term student visa to come and study in France.

  1. You have a Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC), an EHIC, or a temporary replacement certificate
    You can obtain reimbursement of your medically necessary treatment in France under the same conditions as if you were insured under the French scheme. Your card must be valid at least until the end of the current university year. (find out more: Using the EHIC in France)
  2. You have a Portable Document S1
    To benefit from coverage of your healthcare costs during your studies, you must register with the French health insurance system via the website etudiant-etranger.ameli.fr.
  3. You don't have any of the documents mentioned above
    To benefit from coverage of your healthcare costs during your studies, you must register with the French Social Security system via the website etudiant-etranger.ameli.fr.

You are coming from a State not listed above

You will need to register online with the French social security system on etudiant-etranger.ameli.fr

N.B.: If you are a student with coverage as a family member of an international civil servant, you will continue to be covered by the international organization's social security scheme if allowed under the scheme's rules.
